Computing Careers & Disciplines

The field of computing has expanded rapidly over the past 10 years, and students and advisors need more information about the field and its related careers.

This guides provides an overview of computing careers and the academic pathways to arriving at those careers. It describes the five main computing disciplines as defined by the ACM (Association of Computing Machinery), as well as six other popular computing specializations.

For each of the main disciplines, this guide provides information about sample programs and Canadian educational insitutions for those disciplines and specializations.

  • There isn't a single computing credential because there isn't a single computing discipline.
  • The ACM (Association of Computing Machinery) has identified five different computing disciplines.

  • While descriptions of a discipline are helpful, it is useful to learn what graduates in these disciplines actuallly do on a day-to-day basis.
  • The "inside" view at a discpline also includes commentators from other discplines, so that readers can see the overlaps and differences between these disciplines.

  • The summary page for each discipline can be distributed to interested students and clients.
  • A simple chart illustrates the discipline's relative theoretic-practical focus in five broad computing areas .
  • While we can't include every possible educational program, each summary page provides some sample degrees and sample non-degree pathways to learning the discipline.
